Barbie Reproduction: Barbie Learns to Cook

There are big differences between vintage Barbie & reproduction.  Here are some differences between Barbie reproduction #1634 Barbie Learns to Cook.

Comes with a doll display in a kitchen, #1634 Barbie Learns to Cook.   The outfit comes with a dress, panties, toaster with 2 toast, tea kettle, and a large pot with lid, medium pot with lid, small pot with lid, double boiler, potholder, shoes, and cookbook.

This doll is a Swirl Barbie that is made with new hard plastic. Dolls marks as follow

Head: Mattel 1993

Body Mark: Barbie1958 2004 Mattel Inc. China

The differences in the dishes are hard to tell they are made with the same mold.  The main difference is the vintage is not as shiny and you can sometimes see the blue under the silver sometimes.  They were made with blue plastic that is painted silver & black.   Also, the potholder is smaller.  The cookbook looks just like the vintage, so there is no way to tell if you have a vintage or reproduction.

Barbie Clothes Version: Do you keep both version or one?

There are a few Barbie outfits that have been issued more than once. They may have been issued with the same name and number.  They may have been issues with different names and numbers. We all know them.  But there are differences in each.  The question is do you collect both or just one?

The first outfit I can think of is #911 Golden Girl.  It comes with a dress, purse, short gloves, necklace, and shoes.   And in the same year, they issued it again in #961 Evening Splendour.   It comes with a dress, coat, purse, short gloves, necklace, and shoes.  Added to the outfit are earrings, a hat, and a hankie.

#949 Rain Coat comes with coat, hat, boots & umbrella.  A few years later it came out as #0949 Stormy Weather with the same items.  This is a perfect example do you have both or did you only keep one.

#959  Theatre Date out in 1963 and then also in 1964.  But they are different.  The first one comes with a jacket, top, skirt, hat, and shoes.  The #1612 Theatre Date comes with a jacket, top, skirt, and shoes.   So they removed the hat.   At the same time, they removed the hat from the outfit they add it to 1964 Pak: Dress Up Hats.

Sweater Girl is one of the few that has the same items.  The difference is they changed the colors each time.

  • #976 Sweater Girl - orange sweater & shell, grey skirt, yarn in a bowl, scissors, book, and shoes.
  • #957 Sweater Girl - this set is all blue and the accessories are the same
  • #0957 Sweater Girl - this set is all pink and the accessories are the same

In 1965 they issued #1635 Fashion Editor. It comes with a dress, jacket, hat, shoes, and camera.  In 1966 they issued it as #1672 Club Meeting.  It comes with a dress, jacket, shoes, and camera.  The hat was again removed.

In 1965 they issued #1644 On the Avenue.  It comes with a dress, coat, purse, necklace, short gloves, and closed-toe shoes.  Then in 1966, it was issued as #1976 Fabulous Fashion.  It comes with a dress, coat, purse, and closed-toe shoes.  This time they removed the necklace and short gloves.

In 1965 they issues #1648 Photo Fashion. It comes with a sweater, pants, a dickey, shoes, and a camera. Then in 1966 was #1671 Sporting Casuals. It comes with a sweater, pants, and shoes.  In this one, they removed the dickey and camera.

There are more ex-sample but the question is the same.  Do you keep both outfits and just one?

Garage sale and estate sale finds

Just this past week I went to an estate sale that had American Girl in the photos.  It was the second day and I just wanted to see what may still be there.   I find some great finds.  When I got home and started to look up some of them, I found that I miss a few items.  I have done this before.  I must remember that early American Girl does not have tagged on every item.  The new American Girl items are all tagged from the shoes to the headbands.  It was hard when I get home and find I left so much but it was not tagged and I did not remember it.

    Ken ~ #0773 King Arthur

I love Barbie Theatre and its costumes.  I have been working on completing my outfits.  I just got a lot of Barbies with many costumes and find some great treasures.  I had #0773 King Arthur costume but it was not complete.  My outfit was in good condition with an r tag.  The new outfit had a tm tag.  It also had tags on the shirt and vest and a paper tag in the hood.  I discovered that the cord for the belt and sword is different.

Below is a different version of the belt ribbon and sword ribbon.  The TM outfit ribbon is wider and has less detail.  The r. outfit ribbon is thin and more detail.

Here is what they look at next to each other.

    Barbie Information Sources

Now that collector books are hard to fine we need to get information from many different sources.  Some sources to do this with would be search engines (Google, Bing, Explorer), with them you can find websites, blogs, Pinterest and much more.  Just remember that Pinterest, book, website or blog the information may not always correct.

Collector books will always to a great source of information.

I have many, some I use over and over.  Some I have replaced many times.  A good collector book has color photo and information on the outfit or doll.  I like the collector books that have color photo the best.  Books that have only black and white photo can have good information.  But you cannot check the color of items.  So you have to guess sometimes.

Search engines are great to find websites and blogs that have great information that you cannot live without.  The problem is they do not always stay up. I have found some great sites and then they are gone the next time I need them.

Blogs are a good source of information that range for the best or just what you need.  I love blogs.  The problem I have with my blog in ideas.  I will get an idea and write it up and then go months without any new ideas.

I have Pinterest, not share when started.  I have set up boards to make it easy to look at what you want, like Barbie, Tammy, Tressy, Miss Revlon and many more.  I find that Pinterest is a great place to fine NRFB item and catalog page to find more information on items.

What site do you use to find information?
